Uterine fibroids (singular Uterine Fibroma) (leiomyomata, singular leiomyoma) are benign tumors which grow from the muscle layers of the uterus.

They are the most common benign neoplasm in females. Often asymptomatic, they cause symptoms in about 25% of white and 50% of black women. Uterine fibroids often do not require treatment, but when they are problematic, they may be treated surgically or with medication - possible interventions include a hysterectomy, hormonal therapy, a myomectomy, or uterine artery embolization.

Fibroids Symptoms

Fibroid Tumor Symptoms - Did you know that many women with fibroids report having no symptoms. They only realize they have fibroids when they go for a gynecological exam, or ultrasound.

Uterine fibroids are common and occur in about 40% of women by the age of 40. Uterine fibroids are the most common pelvic tumors in women, occurring in approximately 30% of women over the age of 35. Although fibroids are benign (non-cancerous), they may produce a wide variety of symptoms including excessive bleeding leading to iron deficiency anemia, pain and pressure sensations, and even obstruction of the bowel or urinary tract.
